There is a call for an overhaul of Judaism as it is today, the problem is that we all must be intimately familiar with the Torah and the Talmud and in fact the entire Oral Torah – that is every blade of glass on this football pitch of Judaism, for us to really take back our tradition from the cold clenched hand of the current Rabbinic authorities.

The Alter Rebbe the Rav Ha Tanya – says that we must all become familiar with the entire Torah. Anyways – it is only when you’re aware of it all – of the lay of the land of the smell of the wind – the pattern of the seasons the inner rhyme and reasons that you’re able to say – we don’t need a football pitch after all – what we need is some serious landscaping – lets pull out the weeds – lets encourage the flowers to grow, lets make this place into the beautiful garden it was always indented to be.

We don’t need homogeny and the standardization of Judaism, we need to allow the inherent diversity to blossom. The problem is that since the war – and since Fiddler on the Roof – we all think that what we’ve got now – what we’ve inherited as ‘real Judaism’ is in fact ‘true’ – that if we follow and believe then we are doing that God wants – what every Jew has done for generations.

Unfortunately that is simply a myth – what we’ve got today as authentic Judaism is a shallow and polarized product of the horrors of the Holocaust. That is - Judaism in reaction. The Shulchan Auruch (the Code of Jewish Law) is there for people that don’t know anything – they just want to know what to Do – but the Rav explains that we must all learn the entire Torah so that we can make our own Pesuk Dinim, that is come to our own conclusion about what Judaism really is.

Being a sheep is lovely – but the Lubavitch Rebbe explains that each of us must become a leader – must self realise our own inner-Rebbe..
